FRA Juniors Clougha Pike and Quernmore Sports

Country Kids from Coombe Mill Family Farm Holidays Cornwall

This Saturday saw the penultimate fell race of the FRA Junior Championships at Clougha Pike as part of Quernmore Sports. This wasn't too far from Lancaster in the Trough of Bowland so relatively local to us.

The first group to tackle their course were the under 9's who had to complete one lap of the field:

Then it was the under 11's who had to do a bigger lap of the next field as well as the first climb:

For the under 13's, such as my son, had a longer course than normal with 3 km. This meant two big laps at the top which was tough on the younger ones:

You can see how wet it was by the state of my son on his descent, with a horrid stitch, and on his way to 38th place:

It was a wet afternoon and getting wetter by the minute. The under 15 race was a longer one that went off up through the woods before descending back through the field:

The poor under 17s got the worst of the weather for their race which went even further up the hill:

With the races proving tough for the younger ones the under 19s and seniors had a delayed start but were raring to go as they passed me going up the field for a 7 km race:

By this time I was so cold and wet that I retreated back to the show field. My son and his friend had won money in various flat races and I was just in time to catch them on their way to winning money in the Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling:

My son was pleased with £2 for coming 3rd:

He then tried the next age category up and met his match with some of the seasoned wrestlers:

It was then time for the tug of war and my son and his team mates were victorious in this one:

He and I managed to get to the end to end of the egg throwing before a wayward throw from me ended up as a sticky mess... The afternoon was rounded off with a casual game of rounders:

A video of some of the Sports is here:

All in all a great day out, despite the rain, and we will be going back next year for some more laid back fun.

  1. Oh I hope they raise the funds they need. That looks a great play area. Can you believe we even went to the Loire Valley and still didn't go to a Chateau

I love the look of this and have never heard of it before. I wish they would do the same along the Camel Trail here, just think, we could have a cycle rail from Coombe Mill to Padstow, that would be awesome! I may have to suggest it to someone on the council. It looks such fun for all the family and a great way to take in the sights. Lovely looking old chateau, I hope they get the funds to restore it in time.

Thank you for sharing with me on #CountryKids
