Usborne Books on Periscope

One of the many strings to my bow is selling Usborne books on an ad-hoc basis. Today whilst I am running an at home sale I've had a go at Periscoping about some of the fabulous books I currently have in stock. As a novice to Periscope I am still learning so any constructive criticism or tips welcome...

I had to abandon ship as my son came hurtling in the door with his mates in tow! So this second video is a lot longer:

If you would like more information on any of these books then please just ask!

Friday Book Review: Colin the Crab

Sponsored Post

We were sent a copy of Colin the Crab pop up book to review:

With World Oceans Day on June 8th, Colin The Crab, leading light of Norfolk-based Gone Crabbing, has launched a new book about him and his shoal of seaside sole mates – Sally the Starfish and Mike the Mussel with the help of Mr Pop-up, Robert Crowther www.robertcrowtherpopsupco.uk.

Life goes swimmingly for the three friends living happily in their remote rock pool. Then, one summer’s day, Sally and Mike are swept up into a bucket by a couple of children who are exploring the beach. After a bit of a lie down to recover from the shock, Colin is just about to set off to find his friends when, miraculously, they’re returned to their home at the end of the day.

Beautifully illustrated and brought to life by a series of delightful pop-ups, the underlying message in the book is a serious one. Thousands of families enjoy crabbing and rock pooling up-and-down the UK during the summer. However, it’s important to limit the number of sea creatures collected at any one time and to ensure the water is kept cool. And, just as the children in the story do, they should be returned as close to where they were found as possible.

Christmas present

Well that's Christmas done for another year! Time to look and see which presents were the biggest hits this year...

Lego

It was a bit of a Lego fest here this Christmas both in stockings and under the tree. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and Friends all made an appearance. Lots of excitement from children on seeing the contents and lots of fun for all 3 generations in building them:

I grew up with Lego and I never mind buying it for my children. It's such a versatile toy and it encourages dexterity as well as imaginative play.

Playmobil

My children have loved Playmobil for years. They still seem to find a few small sets in their stockings to add to their collection:

We will have to clear some space at home for a major Playmobil scene at home!

Books

Both children had books from older cousins that they have spent plenty of time reading. They also have book tokens to spend in the shops. That will be hours of pleasure to look forward to.

What were your biggest successes this Christmas?

Saturday Book Review: A Medal for Leroy - Michael Morpugo

Sponsored post

One great thing about having a slightly older child now who is advanced at reading is that we are filling our house with fabulous books that we can both enjoy. Michael Morpurgo books certainly fall into this category so I was delighted to be sent a copy of his latest novel to review:

Michael really has a great way of story telling that draws you in. I found myself unable to put this down and was reading in bed until the early hours!

This is another historical novel based upon a boy born in World War Two but with a story linking back to World War One. The book honours the memory of a real life war hero Lieutenant Walter Tull who was killed in action in 1918. Despite his heroic actions he was never awarded a medal as he was black. It's shocking to modern day people to realise that our forces were so racist that coloured service personnel were almost never made officers and that they were also omitted from medal awards.

The fictional story is about Michael whose father died whilst serving in the RAF during World War Two. He is brought up in London by his mother with regular visits to his aunts by the seaside. It takes the death of one his aunts to reveal a family secret that will eventually take Michael as a grandfather to the battlefields of World War One to honour the grandfather he never knew.

A poignant story for teenagers and adults a like. It did bring tears to my eyes...

Wednesday Book Review: Out of Time 2 - Raven's Hoard

Sponsored post

Having enjoyed Gill Jepson's debut novel and her picture book I was delighted to be sent Out of Time 2 Raven's Hoard to review.

Gill lives on the Furness peninsula and all her stories are based in the area and are full of local history. Like her first novel this story is aimed at older children but I found it fascinating to find out more about what was happening in the area in the 18th century and the time of the Vikings.

The hero of this story is the brother of the heroine in the first story. As the book went on the stories overlapped so you would be best to read them in order.

Once again it is down to a teenage boy to travel through time and find the treasure before the bad guys do. This time there is help in the form of a young couple from the 18th century who sometimes travel through time with him whilst battling smugglers in their own time.

There are quite a few tight corners that they have to get out of whilst on their quest. A few twists on the way and surprises made me keep reading. If your child likes mysteries and history then they will enjoy this book. Even as an adult there was enough to keep my interest.

Life's Simple Pleasures

Life these days can be pretty hectic especially for parents and families with commitments at work, school and in the home. Do you find that sometimes you just need to step back and indulge yourself or your family in one of your simple pleasures?

For me one of the most relaxing things is to have time to sit back with a fresh coffee and a good book:

For my children a trip to a playground and either being pushed or swinging themselves is great for both of them:

Sitting down with a colouring or puzzle book is also something that they both enjoy:

And of course you can never quite beat the simple pleasure of jumping in puddles....

What are your simple pleasures?
