Wednesday Book Review: Out of Time 2 - Raven's Hoard

Sponsored post

Having enjoyed Gill Jepson's debut novel and her picture book I was delighted to be sent Out of Time 2 Raven's Hoard to review.

Gill lives on the Furness peninsula and all her stories are based in the area and are full of local history. Like her first novel this story is aimed at older children but I found it fascinating to find out more about what was happening in the area in the 18th century and the time of the Vikings.

The hero of this story is the brother of the heroine in the first story. As the book went on the stories overlapped so you would be best to read them in order.

Once again it is down to a teenage boy to travel through time and find the treasure before the bad guys do. This time there is help in the form of a young couple from the 18th century who sometimes travel through time with him whilst battling smugglers in their own time.

There are quite a few tight corners that they have to get out of whilst on their quest. A few twists on the way and surprises made me keep reading. If your child likes mysteries and history then they will enjoy this book. Even as an adult there was enough to keep my interest.

Reasons to be Cheerful: With letters Q and R ( #R2BC )

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart
Michelle has given us the letters Q (if we are brave!) and R (if not so brave) as prompts for the linky this week. So being me I'll have to try both!

Q for quiet time

Last Friday I was feeling so shattered I actually took the time to buy a takeout coffee and a local paper from the village post office. I then sat in my car enjoying the 2 together. It's amazing what a difference 20 minutes of total chilling can make!

R for rainbows

The good side about the wet weather is the number of rainbows I have seen this week. There is something about a rainbow that is almost a cast iron guarantee of a smile.

R for a ripping read

I was sent the latest book by local author Gill Jepson. I loved her debut novel for teenagers set at Furness Abbey. Her second book Guy the Grumpy Gargoyle is also based at the abbey but is aimed at younger children.

The book tells the story of Guy from the building of the abbey, the dissolution and how some animal friends make him happy again. It was a lovely story to read to my 5 year old at bed time. He loved joining in with appropriate noises or actions.

The book really held his attention and he really enjoyed it. At one point he said it was the best book ever!

That's about all I can think of right now so please go and check out the rest of the hop:

Wednesday book review: Out of Time - Gill Jepson

This is Gill's debut novel and it's based around her love of her local area and especially Furness abbey. It may be a book aimed at teens but it had me hooked! I love the fact that it's based in the nearby Furness peninsula.

The book combines a mystery and time travel as Rebecca and her friends race against evil forces to find the hidden treasure. The action takes place in Tudor times, the 1930s and modern day. It includes ghosts and monsters too.

If you love Cumbria and enjoy a historical mystery with a bit of fantasy then I recommend this book. The sequel is due out soon so I will add that to my reading list...

I really need to drive along and visit the abbey this holiday and put the places in the book into context.
