Reasons to be Cheerful: Back Home #R2BC

R2BC at Mummy from the Heart

I have handed the reins back over to Michelle for November so I know we are in safe hands! Thanks to everyone who joined in with me in October. As well as having had a lovely half term break (plenty of blogposts on their way!) these are my reasons to be cheerful this week:

1) Safely Home

We drove at dawn to Heathrow from our holiday accommodation to meet my daughter's return flight from USA. So happy to have her back in the UK.

2) Frosty Start

We started off the new half term with a cold snap which added a sparkle to the garden:

Reasons to be Cheerful: Something Old Something New #R2BC

R2BC at Mummy from the Heart

Yay its October which not only means the month with the most birthdays in my family (including mine!) but hosting is back to me! Impressing myself on week 1 by actually writing the post on Wednesday night - will I keep that up? Thanks to Michelle for hosting in September and I hope I look after things well until November. So here are my reasons to be cheerful for the first week of October:

1) New discovery

Whilst out trying to hatch Pokemon eggs I discovered a wood on a hill that I didn't know existed! A lovely little spot to escape too:

2) New parkrun shirt

I am very lucky that the backlog of parkrun shirts was resolved only 9 runs after I completed my 50th. It is also great to know that picking the next size down from my old shirt was the right decision as this one is not too tight:

3) Old chair

I inherited a Victorian or Edwardian chair from my granny years ago. However I haven't had anywhere safe to put it since we moved to Kendal so my parents have been looking after it. Since I have re-arranged my bedroom it fits nicely and it is well away from the children!

Small Steps to Tidyness

I sometimes feel like I'm fighting a losing battle when it comes to trying to get a neat and tidy house. The three of us seem to spread our belongings over a wider area as possible! Whenever I tackle one corner or room the children are trashing somewhere else. It becomes a bit of a vicious circle but one I'm determined to break!

This half term my mum volunteered to help sort out the sitting room which really ought to be a place I can be happy to invite people into. It's an awkward room as it has the hall opening into it at one end, the kitchen coming out the other and the stairs going up the side. There is also a fireplace on one wall with a fake fire in it which we have never used. The way we originally put in the furniture was dictated by these constraints and the large traditional TV we have been lent.

There was little option as to where to put the Ladderax storage as only one corner had enough room. However we ended up with first of all the sofa and then the children's chairs in front of the shelves as there was no where else to put them. This made the storage quite hard to use and manage it ended up looking like this:

Not a very inviting looking bit of storage! My mum on Monday helped me to shift furniture round so that nothing was in front of the shelves any more. I then found that where I sit was directly opposite all that mess... So on Saturday with no trips out I decided to knuckle down and do something about it.

Operation 3rd Bedroom

With a lot of hard work from my parents we have finally all got our own bedrooms! It's not a finished job but tonight everyone will be sleeping on their own (hope it lasts all night...).

The first phase of the operation was getting my son into his own room after removing my office and sundry items from the box room. Phase two involved swapping my bed into my new room (but not putting it back together) and moving my daughter's bunk bed into her new room and reassembling it. I then spent the rest of the week on the bottom bunk.

Today was the most complicated part of the project. We had to swap all the rest of the furniture around between mine and my daughter's rooms. Things started to get interesting when my wardrobe had to come out.. This belongs to my landlady and so was already in the middle sized bedroom. We had no problem getting it out of my bedroom onto the landing but then found we couldn't get it round narrow landing into the other bedroom.

It reminded me of the song Right Said Fred by Bernard Cribbens as we kept on trying different angles. For those too young to know what I'm talking about its on YouTube:

Then we resorted to semi-dismantling the wardrobe on the landing. Due to the lack of space we had to keep sliding the wardrobe backwards and forwards to have enough space to do this. We did indeed need to have another cup of tea to get the job done.

Eventually the wardrobe made it via an over the bannister lift and into its new home! Luckily all the rest of the furniture was much more manageable. There is going to have to be some tweaking to get all the furniture with the best use of space. The problem with having an office at one end is that there is more furniture to deal with.

My daughter's room is also going to take some organising to get everything in the right place. It always takes some jiggling to maximise her storage as well as leave her space to play.

The light at the end of the tunnel seems to be getting closer...

#TheGallery: Home

Today Tara wants us to showcase some photographs that mean Home to us. I'm guessing there will be a lot of different takes on this one (click on the camera to see other entries!) but here are mine:

A Tale of 4 Moves...

In advance of my 4th move in 11 years I started to reflect on how different each were and what significant changes they represented ...

Move 1 - First Own Home

My parents must have let off great sighs of relief when I finally moved out of their home at the grand old age of 28! A combination of student debt and high property prices meant I wasn't in a position to afford a mortgage until 4 years after I left university. This was a low key removal affair - my dad and I with a large transit van doing a couple of shuttle runs to move my hand me down furniture and personal possessions the 10 miles down the road. It was only a 2 bed flat so I needed very little and got a good deal buying my new cooker, fridge/freezer and TV as package. The only brand new furniture was an MFI wardrobe.

Move 2 - Togetherness

This was the start of life with my fiance. He had just agreed the purchase of 4 bedroom house to make more space for his 3 children to visit. I only saw the house the week we moved in. This time as we were combining two 2 bedroom properties we hired a Luton Van. With the help of a couple of mates we spent a day driving from one side of town to the other. Between us we completely furnished the place and only needed to buy a larger family size fridge freezer.

Move 3 - Expanding Family

When I became pregnant my husband wanted to reduce the mortgage payments and still have more space to we moved 100 miles to a 6 bedroom Edwardian terrace needing lots of renovation. I had sold my flat a few months previously so we had the funds to pay for a complete removal service. A team of men spent several days packing up all our possessions and transporting them in a full sized removal lorry. They transported the seats from my car so I could transport 2 rabbits plus hutch and a tropical fish tank plus its inhabitants.

Move 4 - Family Breakup

This latest move is having to be very low budget as I am on limited income. I've hired a van and hopefully a mate is driving or I have a quick round trip! Packing is going very slowly around other commitments and is being done by myself, a friend plus my parents when they can visit. I am going to a house about 1/3 the size of the current one and so have to dispose of a lot of things from the house. Some things that moved here from the previous property should have been binned before that move!! Selling some of the items is quite disheartening as you get nowhere near what you paid for them but they have to go so getting something is better than nothing...

I will be in the new place for a minimum of 12 months as that is the length of the lease so will probably be moving again in a year! At least by downsizing our possessions now that should be a lot less stressful - well I hope so...
