Kendal Winter League 2020: Event 1 Scout Scar, Kendal

Helm Hill Runners' 2020 Kendal Winter League (sponsored by Different Strokes Painting & Decorating Ltd and Pete Bland Sports ) kicked off on Scout Scar on January 5th. Unlike the last few years conditions were damp and muddy. This didn't seem to reduce the number of runners on the start line. Race 1: the under 13s were the first ones to tackle the Scar with a testing ascent followed by a race to the finish. For many their first ever fell race and for others a chance to settle scores from previous years.

A total of 112 runners aged 8-12 headed up the hill. It was quite a sight:

All emotions we
re on display from determination to tears but plenty of smiles too:

Race 2: the under 15s had a longer there and back again race with more climbing than the younger runners. Some strong performances and it set the stage for a great competition in this age group:

Race 3: the under 17s were the first ones to climb to the top before racing back down. A tough race for many of those just moving up an age category. Some inspiring running. Afraid the weather made this one tricky to film.

Race 4: the under 21s and seniors had a gruelling 4.8 miles with plenty of ups and downs. Fabulous to see both a highly competitive race at the front of the field as well as those determined to make it round their first fell race.

Matthew Knowles set off as he meant to go on for the league winning by quite a margin:

The league highlights how inclusive the sport is by the ages and experiences of the participants:
