Reasons to be Cheerful: Summer time #R2BC

R2BC at Mummy from the Heart

A slightly delayed reasons to be cheerful as with the heat I've been too shattered to blog after work and after school activities! I am writing this sitting in the garden whilst there is still some shade and letting the paddling pool warm up a bit for a dip later... Hopefully the warm weather is a reason for everyone to have something cheerful to share with us all this week.  Any how here are my reasons to be cheerful this week:

1) Last Primary Sports' Day

It was my son's last ever Primary Sports' Day so I made sure I was there having not been to one since he was in Year 2! I was right on the front row to watch him in action. He came away with one 2nd place for the team obstacle relay and his house was 2nd overall so it was a good result:

2) Sunrise over Coniston Water

We were on the shores of Coniston Water at 5:45 AM on Sunday and the reward was such a beautiful tail end of the sun rise:

3) Volunteering

We were there because we were volunteers at the Triathlon. First of all we did car parking and then my son gave out medals whilst I helped with tags and marshalled at the last gate:

Reasons to be Cheerful: Second last week of term! #R2BC

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

Well its that time of the week again to join in with Michelle and think about what is making us happy this week. Thought I'd be a bit different and I've made a little video with some photo highlights from this week with my daughter's singing group providing the sound track:

What is making you smile this week?

Sports Day

This afternoon it was school sports day and I managed to re-arrange work to go and cheer my children on. It was a scorching hot day but some of us lent the school some gazebos to provide shade for the children:

The adults were left to bake in the sun alongside the track! As you can see I was lucky enough to get a seat close to the action and I was able to watch my children as the excitement built up:

The first event for both of them was the sack race. I have vague memories of doing this one as a child and I love to watch it still going on:

As you can see wearing a hat is a handicap! The next couple of races I videoed and as I can't at the minute edit out other people's children you'll just have to take my word for it that in the flat race and the relay race my children really did their best! My daughter was honest enough to turn around and go back in the bean bag event as her bag missed the target hoop..

The last event of the day for the pupils was the year 5 and 6 "fell" race up and around the grounds. Its compulsory for all the students and looks highly competitive as the race up the path to the top of the hill:

There were some very talented runners who I am sure will go a long way. Then it was the all important parents' race which I had managed to avoid for the previous 4 years! My daughter told me that I had to do it this year after all my running training... Of course we had no proper warm up and I'm not used to a sprint so maybe it was inevitable that I damaged the muscle that I'd hurt just over a month ago... So next year I am leaving the running to everyone else!

A really good proper sports day with all the school taking part and a fabulous atmosphere from the crowd of family and friends. Roll on next year!

Friday App Review: Peppa Pig's Sports Day

Sponsored Post

If your child is a Peppa Pig fan and inspired by the Olympics then this is a perfect app for your iPad or iPhone. It includes a range of sports events, ice cream making and rosette design. As an app aimed at young children all the controls and games are very simple,

Up to four players can choose their favourite characters to take part in the events. Then all they need to do is tap in their little circle to either make them go faster or jump.

The events are obstacle race, long jump, cycling and tug of war. After each event the winner is announced:

And trophy awarded:

For the ice cream making they have to tap on the ingredients and then stir:

My 5 year old played this at a party with lots of other children aged 2+. They all really enjoyed having a go together. This would definitely be a good addition to your apps collection if your child is the right age.

Reasons to be Cheerful: Brought to you by the letter F ( #R2BC )

Reasons to be Cheerful at Mummy from the Heart

Still mostly on a high from our holiday so easy this week just got to fit it with Michelle's letter of the week F!

1) Family

It was great to spend time with my parents and children last week away from home. It was so relaxing and just brilliant to be together in a wonderful place. We worked well as a team to entertain children, cook meals and do the chores. Here's hoping a week together in a tent in August is just as successful!

2) Fitness

Last week was so active with walking, cycling and swimming that I've come back with a minor weight loss! Not normal for a holiday when we drank wine every day and had plenty of cake... Just need to keep it up now that we are home - only 2.5 weeks until the school holidays so fingers crossed the weather changes and we can be out and about as much as possible.

3) Fabulous sports day

My parents went along to cheer on my children on their school sports day. It was my son's first one as a primary pupil and he won a flat sprint race. My daughter also got a 2nd place in the potato race. Hope next year I can reschedule work to be there to watch.

Sport's Day

Yesterday was my daughter's first sports day at her new school. After experiencing my first one at her old school I was pleased that her new school also went for a very traditional set of competitive events with the individual results adding up into a team total. A good crowd of parents, siblings, grandparents and others were there to cheer on the races along with most of next year's reception intake who had been invited along.

Due to the potential for inclement weather the proceedings were conducted with alacrity with the children for the next event ready to go once the previous event had finished. A team of year 6 pupils were on hand to reset the equipment to reduce delays. The afternoon kicked off with the obstacle race which raised plenty of laughs especially when the year 6 children couldn't crawl under the chairs as they were too big... At the end of each event the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place child were handed a token to hand over to the scorers.

Other events included skipping, tangerine & spoon race, flat racing and the spud race. It was great to see such enthusiasm from so many children and some of them were really fast. My daughter had 2 events and in the first (tangerine and spoon) she finished in 3rd place. Her second event was the flat race where despite doing her best she was last across the line:

Her little brother had his own race alongside a bunch of other 4 and 3 year olds. It was such a mix of heights and sizes on the start line and they all gave it their utmost as they ran towards the line. My son was in the lead group across the line and they were all awarded a sticker for taking part.

The last children's events were the fell races for the eldest children. A traditional Cumbrian sport that many of the youngsters showed promise for in the future as they raced up the school hill and back down again. The afternoon rounded off with a parents' bean bag race - during which I'm sorry to report there was plenty of cheating!

Lots of hoarse voices and sore hands in the audience at the end of the day but lots of happy children and grown ups. I am pleased to report that my daughter's team won the overall competition so I'm glad she did her bit with her 3rd place.

With the Olympics next year its great to see a school encouraging competitive sports with all the children involved. No-one seemed upset by not being placed in their race and they all made a great effort to try and do their best.
