There was a fine array of period style costumes and banners and placards:
After a rousing marching song there were 4 speeches. Each from a slightly different point of view with a local campaigner, an anti suffrage speaker, Millicent Fawcett from the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and Emmeline Pankhurst from the Women's Social and Political Union:
Some of the actors were primed to heckle the speakers so that there was crowd interaction during the piece. Then everyone marched through the town to the Birdcage to repeat the performance:
There were some very elegant ladies and an imposing police constable amongst the cast:
The next march took them to the steps of the library which are perfect for street theatre and speeches:
I left at this point but they were going on to further places and repeating the show more times. Here is a taster of the experience that I videoed:

ReplyDeleteWe just found a memorial erected by Sylvia Pankhurst railing against air warfare near our house. Amazing women!
